AIR Joins Cup of Excellence for 2011
In 2010 Australian Independent Roasters was very excited to announce that we had joined as members of the Cup of Excellence coffee programme, the culmination of which was our first Cup of Excellence purchase with a buying group to secure the Nicaraguan Cup of Excellence lot #19 La Esperanza. AIR has had this coffee available periodically to customers and we are constantly amazed at the quality and flavours available from these beautiful beans.
La Esperanza is the first of what we hope is many small lot coffees we buy through this wonderful programme.
The Cup of Excellence is a strict coffee competition that selects the very best coffee produced in that country for that particular year based on the quality in the cup. The winning coffees are chosen by a select group of international cuppers known as the jury. The final winners are awarded the prestigious Cup of Excellence and sold to the highest bidder during an online auction. The Cup of Excellence has been running for just over 10 years in more than nine countries and it bypasses the traditional ‘commodity exchange’ for coffee sales and prices. Coffees and farmers are awarded purely for their quality and this is often reflected in the heated online bidding process. Each country offers this award only once per year. Scott and Saxon also flew to Melbourne in early April to participate in the first ever Cup of Excellence seminar in Australia and to learn more about the standards and coffees provided by Cup of excellence. AIR is hoping to participate in both online auctions and juries in the coming years and hopes to bring some of these amazing coffees back to Australia for you.
